self discipline

In its natural sense, discipline is systematic instruction intended to train a person, sometimes literally called a disciple, in a craft, trade or other activity, or to follow a particular code of conduct or "order". Often, the phrase "to discipline" carries a negative connotation. This is because enforcement of order–that is, ensuring instructions are carried out–is often regulated through punishment.
Discipline is not a course of actions leading to certain goal or ideal. A disciplined person is one that has established a goal and is willing to achieve that goal at the expense of his or her individuality.

Discipline is the assertion of willpower over more base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with self control. Self-discipline is to some extent a substitute for motivation, when one uses reason to determine the best course of action that opposes one's desires. Virtuous behavior is when one's motivations are aligned with one's reasoned aims: to do what one knows is best and to do it gladly. Continent behavior, on the other hand, is when one does what one knows is best, but must do it by opposing one's motivations.[1] Moving from continent to virtuous behavior requires training and some self-

Importance of self discipline

Self-discipline is one of the most important and useful skills everyone should possess. This skill is essential in every area of life, and though most people acknowledge its importance, very few do something to strengthen it.
Contrary to common belief, self-discipline does not mean being harsh toward yourself, or living a limited, restrictive lifestyle. Self discipline means self control, which is a sign of inner strength and control of yourself, your actions, and your reactions.
Self discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind, and is therefore, one of the important requirements for achieving goals.
The possession of this skill enables you to persevere with your decisions and plans until you accomplish them. It also manifests as inner strength, helping you to overcome addictions, procrastination and laziness, and to follow through with whatever you do.
One of its main characteristics is the ability to reject instant gratification and pleasure, in favor of some greater gain, which requires spending effort and time to get it.
Self discipline is one of the important ingredients of success. It expresses itself in a variety of ways:
  • Perseverance.
  • The ability not to give up, despite failure and setbacks.
  • self control.
  • The ability to resist distractions or temptations.
  • Trying over and again, until you accomplish what you set out to do.
Life puts challenges and problems on the path to success and achievement, and in order to rise above them, you have to act with perseverance and persistence, and this of course, requires self-discipline.
The possession of this skill leads to self-confidence and self esteem, and consequently, to happiness and satisfaction.
On the other hand, lack of self discipline leads to failure, loss, health and relationships' problems, obesity, and to other problems.
This skill is also useful for overcoming eating disorders, addictions, smoking, drinking and negative habits. You also need it to make yourself sit and study, exercise your body, develop new skills, and for self improvement, spiritual growth and meditation.
As said earlier, most people acknowledge the importance and benefits of self discipline, but very few take real steps to develop and strengthen it. However, you can strengthen this ability like any other skill. This is done through through training and exercises, which can find at this website.

Self Discipline Benefits and Importance

Self-discipline helps you:
  • Avoid acting rashly and on impulse.
  • Fulfill promises you make to yourself and to others.
  • Overcome laziness and procrastination.
  • Continue working on a project, even after the initial rush of enthusiasm has faded away.
  • Go to the gym, walk or swim, even if your mind tells you to stay at home and watch TV.
  • Continue working on your diet, and resisting the temptation of eating fattening foods.
  • Wake up early in the morning.
  • Overcome the habit of watching too much TV.
  • Start reading a book, and read it to the last page.
  • Meditate regularly.
It will be easier for you to strengthen your self discipline, if you:
  1. Understand its importance in your life.
  2. Become aware of your undisciplined behavior and its consequences. When this awareness increases, you will be more convinced of the need to make a change in your life.
  3. Make the effort to act and behave according to the decisions you make, regardless of laziness, the tendency to procrastinate, or the desire to give up and stop what you are doing.
  4. You can strengthen your self disciple, even if it is currently weak, with the help of special simpleexercises., which you can practice at any time or place.

National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2005)

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2005) is one of four National Curriculum Frameworks published in 1975, 1988, 2000 and 2005 by the National Council of Educational Research and Training NCERT in India. The document provides the framework for making syllabii, textbooks and teaching practices within the school education programmes in India.
The NCF 2005[2] document draws its policy basis from earlier government reports on education as Learning Without Burden and National Policy of Education 1986-1992  and focus group discussion. After wide ranging deliberations 21 National Focus Group Position Papers have been developed under the agies of NCF-2005. The state of art position papers provided inputs for formulation of NCF-2005.
The document and its offshoot textbooks have come under different forms of reviews in the press. Its draft document came under the criticism from the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). In February 2008 the director Krishna Kumar in an interview also discussed the challenges  that are faced by the document.
The approach and recommendations of NCF-2005 are for the entire educational system. A number of its recommendations, for example, focus on rural schools. The syllabus and textbooks based on it are being used by all the CBSE schools, but NCF-based material is also being used in many State schools.  NCF 2005 has been translated into 22 languages and has influenced the syllabii in 17 States. The NCERT gave a grant of Rs.10 lakh to each State to promote NCF in the language of the State and to compare its current syllabus with the syllabus proposed, so that a plan for future reforms could be made. Several States have taken up this challenge. This exercise is being carried out with the involvement of State Councils for Educational Research and Training [SCERT] and District Institutes of Education and Training [DIET].

Main Features of the NCF 2005

The document is divided into 5 areas:
·         Perspective
·         Learning and Knowledge
·         Curriculum Areas, School Stages and Assessment
·         School and Classroom Environment
·         Systemic Reforms
·         Mother tongue as a medium of instructions.
·         free development
·         availability of resources

Kerala Curriculum Framework(2007)
The existing syllabus in kerala is based on kerala Curriculum Framework 2007. Activity oriented learning is emphasizes in the syllabus and the teaching process is student centric. Teacher’s role is more like that of a facilitator than that of a guide or an instructor. Even though there were serious concerns about the existing syllabus. It was later well admitted and appreciated by experts all over India. It has certainly brought about a positive change in class rooms and the back benchers who were no responding and getting involved. There may be  a need for revision of syllabus as periodic revision of syllabus is inevitable. But this is that it should be carried out after elaborate preparation and deliberations. Prior to the formation of a framework, discussion with all teacher organizations needed. The main contention against the present curriculum reform is that it is being done without extensive discussion on the framework and textbook revision is progressing and nearing completion.
Discussions at various levels were conducted before the finalization of KCF 2007. This is not done in the care of present curriculum revision. KCF 2007 was introduced with the strong support of NCF 2005 which was a paradigm shift from the existing system. Curriculum reforms should be multi faceted and comprehensive
